  Description
At Digital-Tutors, we've found that many people starting out creating models in 3ds Max have some difficulty in creating the specific vision they have. In many cases it's not necessarily a lack of knowledge of the tools as much as it is a lack of confidence and experience. So, to give you a head start on your modeling, we've put together a number of 3ds Max tutorials covering tips collected from production and from teaching students that will help you build the best models you can with minimal frustration. We'll begin this course by talking about breaking down our modeling projects into smaller pieces. We'll cover methods for staying aware of as much information as possible about our geometry while we work. We'll cover specific techniques for adding circular resolution to square objects and go over setting up Viewport Backgrounds. This course is meant for students that have some modeling experience and are familiar with the tools but would like a few tips for creating a smoother workflow and getting better results. Software required: 3ds Max 2010.

First, you'll begin by looking at the various types of geometry available to you, and you'll learn how to organize your model into hierarchies and keep your scene clean and efficient. Next, you'll take a look at several modeling tools including polygon modeling tools like Extrude and the Swift Loop tool for adding resolution, spline modeling techniques to create smooth surfaces, and many other tools and techniques as well. Finally, you'll take a look at using a smoothing or subdivision workflow and use modifiers to help shape your models. After watching this course, you'll have a better understanding of how these tools work together, and you'll be able to create your own modeling solutions and come up with a workflow that's comfortable for you.

Video Description
In this video tutorial on 3ds Max 2012, expert author and animator Brian Mennenoh introduces you to the many features of this 3D modeling and animation software from AutoDesk. Brian has over 20 years experience working with 3D, and his engaging teaching style draws you in and allows you to enjoy the sometimes complex intricacies of such a powerful software program.
Using a single project throughout the whole training course, you will learn how to use the interface and a good production workflow, several modeling techniques, material creation, basic lighting, camera setups, matching a camera to a background image, rendering settings and more. At the end of the lessons you will have created a robot and a fully skinned fairy, rigged with bones, battling with crayons after their kids walked away from a coloring project.
By the completion of this computer based training course, you will have a solid foundation in 3ds Max and be able to start working on your own projects, building on the knowledge gained throughout the lessons. Extensive working files are included to allow you to work alongside the author in this project, learning with the same files that he is using in the training.
